Is there ever a reason to cover the unit?
Three, and all of them are short-term and top-only:
- Hurricane or severe storm. A breathable top cap or a piece of plywood on the top of the unit keeps large debris out of the fan. Power is usually off anyway. Remove it as soon as the storm passes — before power returns.
- Heavy leaf or pine-needle drop from an overhanging tree, for a few days. A mesh top cover keeps the coil from packing with needles. Better answer: trim the tree.
- Construction or painting next to the unit. Cover it, keep the system off at the breaker, uncover it the same day.
Never a full wrap, never a tarp, never anything that touches the sides, and never with the system running.
What should I do for the outdoor unit in winter instead?
- Keep two feet clear on all sides and five feet above. Cut back shrubs, rake out leaves. Airflow is the whole game.
- Rinse the coil with a garden hose from the inside out on a mild day — no pressure washer. Florida units collect pollen, grass clippings, and dryer lint.
- Do not panic about frost. A heat pump frosting over on a cold morning and then steaming for five minutes is the defrost cycle working. Frost that never clears, or ice a half-inch thick, is a defrost board or refrigerant problem — that is a $400–$800 repair if it is the board.
