What does the evaporator coil actually do?

Formicary corrosion. Humidity plus everyday household chemicals eat pinholes through copper tubing, and Orlando coils sit wet 8–9 months a year. Age finishes the job around years 8–12.

The failure that kills most Orlando coils is invisible until it isn't. Formicary corrosion is a chemical attack on copper caused by volatile organic compounds — cleaning sprays, air fresheners, paints, even some building materials — combining with moisture on the coil surface. It bores tunnels the width of a hair through the tubing, and one tunnel is enough. Florida gives it perfect conditions: the coil is wet from May through October, the house is closed up and recirculating those chemicals, and the system logs 2,800+ run hours a year, roughly a third more than a northern system. Add a decade of thermal cycling and vibration and the copper gives out. Manufacturers moved many coils to aluminum in the 2010s to slow this, which helps — it does not cure it. How do I know it's the evaporator coil and not something else?

Five signs: ice on the indoor coil or line set, a system that needed refrigerant more than once, a faint hissing at the air handler, weak cooling with the unit running nonstop, and indoor humidity that won't drop below 60%.

A leaking coil looks like a low-refrigerant system, because that is what it is. The tell is that the low charge comes back. A capacitor or a drain problem announces itself with a hard stop; a coil leak is a slow fade — the house runs 2–3°F warmer than the setpoint, the system runs 20 hours a day, the power bill climbs, and the air feels clammy because a starved coil stops removing humidity before it stops cooling. Frost or ice on the copper line at the air handler is the classic picture. The confirming test is not a guess: we put gauges on the system, check superheat and subcooling, and find the leak with an electronic detector and, when needed, dye or nitrogen pressure. Can't I just keep adding refrigerant instead of replacing the coil?

You can, and it is the most expensive way to own an air conditioner. At $110–$200 per pound, a 3-ton system that loses its 6–10 pound charge every season costs $700–$1,800 a year in refrigerant alone.

Topping off is renting refrigerant. It buys cooling for a few weeks or months, the leak keeps leaking, and each visit is a service call plus pounds at the current price — a price that is climbing every year as federal R-410A production cuts bite. Two summers of top-offs on a 3-ton system can equal the cost of the coil, with nothing to show for it. There is also a mechanical cost: a system running low on charge runs the compressor hot and starved of the oil that circulates with the refrigerant, and a compressor is the one part more expensive than the coil. Why does the price range from $1,500 to $2,500?

Six variables: coil brand and match, cased versus uncased, where the air handler lives, how many pounds of refrigerant it takes, whether the TXV and filter-drier get replaced, and R-410A versus R-454B.

The coil itself is the first swing. An exact-match cased coil that slides into a modern air handler is the low end; a coil for an older or discontinued air handler that has to be adapted, or an uncased coil built into a custom plenum, pushes toward the top. Access is the second: a closet air handler on a slab is a 4-hour job, while an attic unit at 130°F with a 22-inch scuttle hole is a 6-hour job with work-and-cool breaks, and sometimes a helper. Refrigerant is the third and the biggest mover — 6 pounds at $110 is $660, 10 pounds at $200 is $2,000. Then the small parts that a proper coil job includes and a rushed one skips: a new filter-drier (mandatory when the system has been open), and often a new thermostatic expansion valve, since a TXV that spent a year starved is a coin flip. Finally, refrigerant type: a 2025-or-newer R-454B system uses an A2L-rated coil and refrigerant at $90–$150 a pound, and some of those parts are still on longer lead times. Can a new coil go on my old system — and which refrigerant does it need?

Yes on an R-410A system, with a matched R-410A coil. Never mix: an R-454B condenser cannot pair with an R-410A coil, and a mismatched coil voids the parts warranty and hurts efficiency.

This is the trap in 2026. Since January 1, 2025, new residential systems ship with R-454B, and the temptation when a coil fails on an older system is to piece together whatever is on the shelf. Two rules keep you out of trouble. First, the coil must be AHRI-matched to the outdoor unit — same refrigerant, compatible capacity and metering device. A mismatch is not a preference; manufacturers refuse warranty claims on unmatched systems, and the pairing typically gives up 10–20% of rated efficiency, which you pay for every month in Orlando. Second, refrigerants do not cross. R-454B is an A2L refrigerant that legally requires rated coils, leak sensors, and rated controls; no manufacturer approves running it in R-410A equipment, and the reverse is equally off the table. So the honest answer for a 2010–2024 R-410A system is a matched R-410A coil, which remains available and legal to service indefinitely.
